Halloween SPIDER Fizzy Drink

With the orange hues being a classic Halloween (or Fall colour), I thought I would share this very quick and easy drink EVERYONE is bound to love.

Halloween Drinks

(Read to the end to find out the Southern Hemisphere history of this drink which we call a 'SPIDER' and the chemistry lesson.)

Halloween Drinks

Classic orange Fanta is the fizzy drink element.

Icecream the filler component in the vessel.

Then watch the fun frothy reaction when you pour the Fanta onto the icecream.

Top with whippy canned cream, add sprinkles and a straw.

Use the straw to poke the icecream into the Fanta if it settles and devour.

It's like pudding in a glass!

So yummy!

And one of these at a time is never enough.

They are loads of fun for the kids to build their own 'SPIDER'.

🕷

SPIDER History:

An icecream float elsewhere, but in New Zealand and Australia it is called a 'SPIDER'.

Due to the spider like frothy web in the drink.

It's a fizzy but creamy beverage made from fizz/soda and icecream served in a tall glass, with or without the added topping of whipped cream and sprinkles.

I have fond memories going to the tearooms in town for a special occassion, where the children always ordered a SPIDER!

It was such a treat in those days.

And it still is.

Only now we can recreate the drink at home.

Halloween Drinks

SPIDER Chemistry Lesson:

Halloween Drinks

The chemical reaction between the icecream and the fizzy/soda drink is caused by the gas molecules from the fizz/soda gathering on the tiny ice crystals that are on the surface of the icecream.

Together they become bubbles of gas. (The frothy reaction).

If the icecream in the glass is melting (not dry) the reaction is not as prevelant.

So you need straight from the freezer into the glass quick pour to get a good froth!

To Make:

Halloween DrinksHalloween DrinksHalloween Drinks

3/4 fill a tall glass with ice cream as shown

Pour over one can of ice cold Orange Fanta

Top with canned whipped cream

Add Sprinkles.

Serve with a straw.

Note:

I used caramel swirl icecream, but you usually use plain vanilla, or french vanilla flavours.

You can also use other fizz/soda flavours like cola, lime, raspberry, passion, lemonade, ginger beer, etc.

Halloween Craft

Using a hot glue gun.

Halloween Craft

Glue ears onto cork.

Halloween Craft

Then the wings.

Halloween Craft

Paint white circles of for the eyes.

(Dry with a hairdryer for fast drying)

(You could also use small-size plastic boggle craft eyes instead of painting them.)

Halloween Craft

Then paint the black pupil onto the eye.

(Dry again with a hairdryer).

Halloween CraftHalloween Craft

Glue on a (twine or ribbon)hanger to the bottom of the bat.

Then display it on a raw branch in a vase.

You could paint the branch orange, black or white.

But I have left mine naturally raw.

Halloween Bats

Quick 'n' Easy Halloween Fabric Pumpkins...

Halloween
This years Halloween display was kept simple,
as I simply did not have time to create anything elaborate.

Halloween
I had seen these fabric pumpkins using a toilet roll as the base so decided that fitted the quick 'n' easy criteria.
To make them, all you need is:
Toilet rolls  ( I used two different sizes - one large - two usual size).

Fabric cut to 55cm x 43 centimetres
(the chiffon fabric was doubled as it is see through)
Cinnamon Stick for the stems.
Card leaves
(I free hand drew these but the are many options to print on the net, just google 'pumpkin leaves to print)

To Make:

Centre the toilet roll on the fabric and tuck the fabric into hole.

Then add a cinnamon stick for the stem.
(Lola thought these smelt so good!)

Cut out your hand drawn or internet sourced printed leaves.

Halloween
Add to the cinnamon stick stem.

Halloween
Place in your Halloween display.

The Treat jar was made last year.

Pure Mandarin & Honey Jelly Lollies... ❥

Jelly Lollies
If you're looking for a healthier Halloween, party or everyday treat,
then these easy-to-make jelly lollies are the answer!

These are made with pure freshly picked and then squeezed mandarin juice.
I've also made the jelly lollies with orange juice.

You need 2 cups of fresh juice.
Strain the juice in a sieve to remove pips and bits.
Place one cup into a small pot with 4 tablespoons of honey.
Make sure the honey is a mild flavour like clover,
as if you use strong honey it will overpower the citrus flavour.

In a small bowl, sprinkle over the top the other 1 cup of juice and 6 Tablespoons of unflavoured gelatin powder.

Let the juice slowly soak up the gelatin at its own pace.  DO NOT STIR IT.
This process is called 'bloom'.

Bring the remainder of the juice and honey in the pot to a medium heat .
Add the bloomed gelatin mixture.
Stir with a whisk until dissolved.
Set aside to cool.

You will need small silicon moulds.

Place the cooled juice mixture in small jug lots to pour into the moulds.
(These are great fun for the kids to make!)

Place on trays in the fridge overnight to set.

The pure mandarin and honey jelly lollies keep well in a covered plastic container in the fridge.  And they don't stick together.

I'll be making these in Halloween moulds for sure,
as they are a huge hit with jelly lolly lovers...
As a bonus they are pretty to look at, yum to eat, as well as healthy!

The printable recipe is HERE.
